Withdrawal from Lebanon (2000)

In May, 2000, Israel unilaterally withdrew its troops from Southern Lebanon in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 425. This was done in order to improve prospects of concluding peace treaties with Syria and Lebanon and restore peace and security to both sides of the international border. However, the Lebanese Islamist group Hezbollah remained committed to violence and continually attacked Israel with missiles and cross-border raids in the years that followed.
