The Israeli War of Independence, 1948
On May 15, 1948, the day after its creation, the State of Israel was invaded by the Arab armies of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. The fighting continued until January 1949. Israel survived the attempt to destroy it and significantly increased the original territory allotted to it by the UN partition plan. The West Bank and eastern sector of Jerusalem was seized by Jordan while Egypt occupied the Gaza Strip. Despite their defeat, the Arab states refused to recognize Israel’s existence, choosing instead to remain in a state of war with the Jewish state.
