The only Middle East democracy
Every year, Freedom House issues a comprehensive report on the state of freedom worldwide in terms of political rights and civil liberties [Attachment – Freedom House]. In its 2008 report, Israel was the only Middle Eastern country to be given a “free” ranking. In other Middle Eastern countries, political and civil rights are severely curtailed, especially when women and adherents of non-Muslim religions are concerned.
Freedom House bases its conclusions on the state of civil liberties (including freedom of expression, judicial independence and religious equality), political rights and economic freedom in 192 countries. Israel consistently scores highly, despite the pressing security concerns it has to deal with.
