Zionism: Imperialism or Resettlement?
Jews who immigrated to Israel were not imperialists. Rather they were, as Allan Dershowitz put it, “refugees from oppressive regimes who were seeking to begin new lives in a place their ancestors had long ago settled and from which most but not all of them had eventually been driven”. Imperialism can only occur through one country forcibly occupying the territory of another. Jews did not have their own country through which to colonise others, and in any case saw themselves as returnees, not occupiers.
