The Land of Israel after the Romans

Following the eventual collapse of the Roman Empire, Israel - now known as ‘Palestine’ - came to be occupied by a succession of imperialist powers, including the Byzantine, Persian, Arab, Crusader, Mamluk, Ottoman and British empires. Under the Ottomans (1517-1917) the area was a province of Syria. Throughout this period, ‘Palestine’ was no more than a geographical expression, a sparsely populated backwater that at no stage ever became an independent country.
