Judges, Kings and Prophets
From the conquest of the land under Joshua during the 13th Century BCE to the Babylonian occupation a thousand years later the Jewish people maintained an independent presence in the Land of Israel, led by famous judges, prophets and kings whose names have become legendary in the annals of human civilization. The Jewish kingdom achieved its height during the reigns of Kings David and Solomon, thereafter splitting into two separates states. The Northern Kingdom (‘Israel’) was eventually overcome by the Assyrian Empire in 740-722 BCE and most of its people exiled. The Southern Kingdom (‘Judea’) fell to the Babylonians in 586 BCE.
